MenScience Is Now Available!

Menscience_shampooWe are proud to announce that Menscience products are now available on our site and in our stores. The bottom line is that these products simply work -- they aren't all about zany marketing and clever packaging.  Early favorites among the GL staff include the Daily Shampoo (a favorite of the famous Dr. Michael Lubecki, our longest tenured Master Grooming Expert) and Pigmentation Repair Formula (highly recommended by respected Men's Skin Care Expert, Ms. Nikki Parker). Random Notes

Picture_of_jodi Just a few random notes today:

  1. Return of the "Jodi": A very big congratulations and thanks to Jodi "The Jedi" Ross, Guest Services Coordinator for our Washington, D.C. store.  As the winner of a recent Customer Excellence contest, Jodi is forced to endure this "shout out" on our blog.  Beyond that, it must be said that Ms. Ross is doing a fantastic job and has already made a terriffic impression on our staff and guests.
  2. Menscience is Coming:  Look for the debut of Menscience Androceuticals on groominglounge.com on October 1st. This "cosmeceutical" line is first-rate and won the hearty approval of staffers from both our D.C. and Virginia stores. 
  3. Catalog Is Coming Too:  The Grooming Lounge's annual catalog is well into production and should be ready to ship out on November 15th.  This year's catalog will be bigger and better than ever -- featuring more than 50 pages of men's grooming products and expert advice.  It'll also be pretty funny.  Can't give too much away, but our Grooming Guru, Pirooz, just finished a photo shoot in which he was wearing a Super Hero costume while dispensing grooming advice. 

Yeah... we've got a few issues to deal with.

He's A Sharp Dressed Man

My favorite business partner and Grooming Lounge Co-Founder, Pirooz Sarshar, was just named one of Washington, D.C.'s best-dressed men by Washingtonian Magazine (he's featured in this month's issue).  To be honest, I hardly knew how incredibly stylish ole' Pirooz was?  I guess when you've been working with a guy every day for seven-plus years, you just stop noticing the little things.  Shame on me.  When I see him today, I'll definitely compliment him on his shoes, socks or something like that. Proud of you partner! 

That said... this honor recently bestowed on Pirooz got me thinking about my own sense of style.  No slouch myself, I think it needs to be stated that I too have won awards for my sense of fashion.  If anyone out there has their 1985 Robert Frost Middle School yearbook handy, please turn to page 17 and notice me, Mike Gilman, pictured as the best dressed member of our 8th Grade class.  Sporting a pair of Girbaud khaki pants, a sweater from Britches Great Outdoors (long-gone regional preppy store), and a face full of shiny braces (complete with rubber bands), I was no doubt ahead of my time.

Why Is Grooming Lounge Different?

If you're reading this blog, you are certainly aware that the number of men's grooming products, web sites and stores is increasing everyday. The men's grooming market is growing rapidly -- but is still in the early stages of its explosion. That said, how does a consumer like yourself seperate the real players from the pretenders?  How do you determine which joint really knows what it's doing and which is just trying to make a quick buck in a cool segment?

Well, we're sorry to say that we don't have all the answers?  We really can't speak for every recent M.B.A. who graduates from _________ (insert school here) and decides they've got what it takes to conquer the market. We can tell you that loading up on tons of venture capital and having pretty business plans doesn't always translate into a great customer experience and financial success.  How do we know... we see some players of this ilk bite the dust everyday.  And while we never wish failure on anyone -- everytime one of these pretenders drops -- it just goes to further prove our concept and background.  It further proves that Grooming Lounge is a different breed. Why??? Read below.

Grooming Lounge was started by Pirooz and I because we have a passion for this business.  We both grew up in the "beauty/grooming" market and have used our combined industry experience to formulate the way anything and everything is done within our company. 

Pirooz has been cutting hair since he was a teenager.  His mother was a hairstylist and taught him the ropes of fashion/beauty/grooming at an early age.  He used these early experiences to become one of the country's top platform artists at hair shows from California to Florida.  Currently, in addition to serving as the company's educational leader, spokesperson and Grooming Guru (he knows everything about hair, skin, etc.), Pirooz also teaches men's haircutting at one of the country's top hair academies.  What does this mean?  It means that Pirooz influences and has a say in every service that is provided at the Grooming Lounge and gives his personal approval on every product that is offered on our site and in our store. He's the real deal and is often the "go-to" grooming source for magazines like GQ, Maxim  and more.

As for me (Mike), I'm the marketing guy and the one who writes most of the stuff you read on this site.  I grew up in the family business (selling head-to-toe grooming products) and always wished there was a place to get these services that woudn't emasculate me.  A place for guys -guys.  Grooming Lounge stores are that place and the web site is just an extension of the store (by the way, who would take the recommmendations of a web site where the owner/writer has no background in the industry?).

The bottom line is that when Pirooz and I got together we wanted to create something special.  Destinations where guys could not only get the best in technical service (great haircuts, skincare, etc), but also the best in customer service (treated like a king). We wanted to create destinations that had as much steak as sizzle. We set out to create WOW experiences for men.

We've done that and want to raise the bar on our service level everyday.  That's why we train our great team at least once a week and are never satisfied with service (we can always do better).

Well, we think we've provided enough GL propoganda. We're different because men's grooming and customer service is our passion -- our mission.  Providing great technical and customer service comes before all else.  That's the "Kool Aid" our staff drinks everyday.

We Miss You Billy Boy!

Billy_boy The entire Grooming Lounge staff wants to wish our former Virginia Store manager, Bill Patton, the best of luck on his new life and love in Atlanta.

Bill was a valued member of the Grooming Lounge team and was a shining example the enthusiasm and customer service our company strives for everyday.

Even though Billy is down south, we still consider him part of our family and will try to continue to carry out his ongoing goal -- to make every man who comes into Grooming Lounge feel like a king!

Go get em' Billy Boy.  And by the way, when Billy gets married in Vegas next month, not too many GL staffers will be able to attend.  We gotta' work Billy.  Sure you understand.

Mayor Elect Shaves That Dome With GL Shave Oil

Fenty Grooming Lounge wants to send a big congratulations out to D.C. Mayor-Elect, Adrian Fenty.  Why are we so happy Mr. Fenty won?  Well, to be honest, it's not that we agree or disagree with his political stance on any particular issue.  Instead, it's has more to do with us having the same opinion when it comes to what Shave Oil is best to use when shaving one's head. 

Yes it's true, the new D.C. Mayor uses Grooming Lounge Beard Master Shave Oil to get that chrome dome clean and shiny.  When all is said and done, I guess we have the same stance on the "Oil Industry".

Today Show Host Loves GL Products
